Demand Plan Attainment
How closely actual demand followed the agreed demand plan for the period.
Definition
How closely actual demand followed the agreed demand plan for the period.
Why it matters
The demand plan drives purchasing, capacity and inventory. If attainment is low, every downstream plan is wrong before execution begins.
Formula
Demand Plan Attainment = 1 - (ABS(Actual Demand - Planned Demand) / Planned Demand)
Example
Plan 10,000 units, actual 8,800 units. Attainment = 1 - (1,200 / 10,000) = 88%.
How to interpret it
Read it alongside forecast bias. High error with no bias means noise; high error with bias means a systematic planning problem.
How to improve it
Add promotion and event intelligence to the plan, review at item-family level, and hold a monthly demand review with sales accountability.
Common mistakes
Measuring only at aggregate level, where offsetting errors hide serious item-level misses.
