Spend Under Management
The share of total addressable spend actively managed through sourcing, contracts and supplier governance.
Definition
The share of total addressable spend actively managed through sourcing, contracts and supplier governance.
Why it matters
Unmanaged spend is where price leakage, maverick buying and unvetted supplier risk accumulate.
Formula
Spend Under Management = Managed Spend / Total Addressable Spend x 100
Example
42M of 60M addressable spend under contract and governance = 70%.
How to interpret it
Rising coverage should show up as lower price variance and fewer one-off suppliers. If it does not, coverage is nominal rather than real.
How to improve it
Attack the largest uncovered categories first, set contract coverage targets, and route requisitions to preferred suppliers by default.
Common mistakes
Counting spend as managed because a contract exists, even when buyers routinely purchase outside it.
